HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1979. This model was first introduced in 1976, and this particular watch would have been for the UK market.
CONDITION
You don’t find many gold watches made in 1979, and when you do they are likely to be from very prestigious brands. The reason was the price of gold went crazy in the 1970s – at the start of the decade it under $39 an ounce, and when this watch was made it was $459 – over an eleven fold increase! It was very hard for manufacturers to keep up with continual rising prices of the base material, and watch prices in precious metals shot up. So when you find a gold watch from 1979, you know the manufacturer was not making it lightly. The Constellation was the premium watch on Omega’s line up since it’s introduction in 1948, and it has taken many different forms. This rectangular case with slim for the time quartz movement was ahead of the trend that covered the early 1980’s. It is a good size (square watches wear larger) and weight, and feels very solid. There is a dent in the case back but that does not affect the operation of the watch, and of course that can not be seen when wearing the watch. The movement is Omega’s 1330, and it is running well. With this movement the hour hand is adjusted via turning the crown, and the minute hand by pressing in the button in the centre of the crown. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner.
