This Garrard gold watch was a presentation piece for long service, and retains lots of original features. Model reference PR261
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the inscription on the case back, which corresponds perfectly with the paperwork, we can accurately date this watch to being presented in May 1979. The London 9k / 0.375 hallmark is also for 1979, so we know the watch had not been in stock for long before the presentation.
CONDITION
The concept of getting a gold watch for 25 years continuous service is alien today – few people do 25 years at one firm, and then the prospect of reward is more likely to be a voucher. But it used to be the norm, and we believe it adds something to the watch history. The history of the company Metal Box can be read here, but we have been less successful in finding out about Herbert Baines.
The watch has been worn, and as such the DS&S made case shows small marks and signs of life as you would expect. The case has been cleaned and a new Hirsch leather strap fitted. The dial is very good, and its proud of the quartz movement inside – quartz watches were only launched in 1969, so by 1979 once costs had come down they were the movements to have. This watch has a seven jewel ESA 9362, a good Swiss movement that you expect a prestigious jeweller like Garrard to use – they are and have been the chosen jewellers to the Royal family since 1735 after all. This is running well and we will fit a new battery prior to sending the watch out. The acrylic crystal is new too.
