One of the later, and most accurate, Seiko Grand Quartz models with their twin quartz movement. Model reference 9943-8010.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in April 1979. There is another inscription on the case back to show it was gifted in 1982. Both years therefore would be valid for a birth year watch.
CONDITION
This was one of the cheapest Grand Quartz models in the 1979 catalogue at ¥80,000, mainly due to the fact that this watch never came on a bracelet but instead was always designed to be on a leather strap. Not that it was cheap – you had a wide choice of other Seiko’s in 1979 around ¥30,000, but the Grand Quartz had the highly accurate 9943 movement that promised less than a second per month accuracy when new. This one is running just over that, at 1.24 seconds per month (or 0.04 of one second per day fast), which is remarkable and a testament to the Seiko design and quality. You also get quick set day and date, with the day being available in either English or Kanji. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner. The case and dial are very good in this example. Because this model never had a bracelet, you have a wider choice of straps available to you including XL versions – ideal if you like the Grand Quartz but find all the bracelets on the smaller side. This leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement and crown (with the twin quartz logo).
