HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in January 1978. At ¥48,000, this gold plated example was ¥5,000 more than the steel version. It was also double the price of a the mechanical 6138 bullhead chronograph
CONDITION
The A159 module gives you a main display showing the time and day of the week. Press the top right pusher and the date is shown, and pressing the bottom right pusher shows what time the alarm is set for. The bottom right pusher selects the chronograph. The pusher at the top right activates the light, but these were and are always poor. But it all works, and we will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner and set it to your time zone. The watch would have had a bracelet from new, but this has been lost over the years – or maybe it didn’t? The case back is stamped SAMPLE, and these are basically pre production watches used to show the Seiko dealers what was in the pipeline, as saleman’s tools basically. So it isn’t unusual to see slight changes than on the full production run. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement and box.
