HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in February 1978.
CONDITION
In 1978 you had lots of choice of how to power your watch. Quartz had taken over, after Seiko launched the first quartz watch in 1969. LED watches had just about had their day, replaced by more efficient LCD watches (again, pioneered by Seiko). Or you could have automatics, or manual watches. Seiko automatics were quite cheap, so very few people opted for the only slightly less manual model. But as Seiko automatics are automatic wind only, many collectors prefer the manual wind movement as you know it wound up properly. This has the 63A 17 jewel movement, which also doesn’t have any calendar functions. This allows the dial to be uncluttered and more balanced, and leads to a thinner case too. The bracelet has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath. Both case and bracelet will have light scratches, as we don’t machine polish any watches. Since taking the photos we have polished the acrylic crystal to remove the scratches revealed by the photos.
