HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in September 1978.
CONDITION
The last 1978 Grand Seiko we had sold very quickly and was more than four times the price of this King Seiko. Part of that price difference can be down to the rise in prices for Grand Seiko, part for the under appreciation of the King Seiko, and partly for the condition. The dial on this example has a light linen texture to it, but is has also faded from silver to a darker grey. This faded dial leaves a unique watch, unlike any other in the World. We can not say what caused this – sunlight possibly – but we have ruled out a battery leak as the movement is all clean and working perfectly. Both the day and date can be quickset, and the day wheel is in English and Kanji. The bracelet is not the original either – the clasp is not signed and the end pieces are not numbered. However the replacement is a good match and long enough for most wrists. It would be hard to find a King Seiko bracelet from this time, but it could be possible. The crown is signed with the crystal logo that features on the dial – Seiko were rightly proud of their pioneering use of quartz – this King Seiko quartz was made less than a decade after Seiko introduced the world’s first quartz watch in December 1969, so they used the quartz symbol on the dial because you would be proud to have a quartz watch in 1978 – after all a day date automatic Seiko Actus was a quarter of the price of the King Seiko Quartz then.
