The Oceanographer 666ft devil diver is a popular model, but not always easy to find. This is a lovely example.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1978.
CONDITION
This is the second 1978 Oceanographer we have had, and part of the appeal is the size. Smaller than most divers watches that feel huge to those of us used to wearing vintage watches, it is a comfortable wear. The dial has a little of the Royal Oak about it, but it is not raised squares like the Royal Oak. The hands and hour plots are filled with Tritium, and although the hands barely glow any more the lume plots still do. Some people would have the hands re lumed with modern material, but we like to keep everything original where possible. On originality, this watch has the correct bracelet and it is a good length. It has been cleaned in out ultrasonic bath, as has the original clasp. Also original is the signed crown, and it is nice to see the pusher at 4 working too – this is a feature that Bulova used in the early quartz watches and it can advance the seconds hand for extra accuracy. This feature is rarely if ever used, so often then pusher has seized, but not in this model. The movement is Bulova’s own, and the day wheel is in French and English.
