HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1978, but the engraving on the case back shows a date of 1979. However the paperwork, which states the model number and movement serial number and same name as the case back, shows it was sold in March 1980. Either the employers, Albright and Wilson Ltd, missed the anniversary of 25 years service, or they had to order the watch in especially. Either way we have a 1978 watch, engraved for 1979, and papers showing it was presented in 1980.
CONDITION
While the watch might have been given late, it was not an inexpensive gift. By 1980 gold had raced to an all time high, and therefore gold watches were four or five times the price they were a decade earlier. This spike in price of gold pretty much stopped the tradition of the gold watch being given as a long service award, with some exceptions. The gold case was assayed in Birmingham and is stamped Omega Watch Co., and is all in good order. There are minor marks on the bottom right lug, but what looks like a scratch near one on the bezel was just a small piece of fibre that we wiped off before the video. The movement is Omega’s calibre 1030, a manual wind with quick set date, which is all working well. The dial is very clean and without damage, and the acrylic crystal is excellent. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
This watch will be supplied with the inner and outer original presentation boxes, papers and our Certificate of Authenticity. The hinge on the red Omega box is broken.
