HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in April 1977. We have also found this 4843-5100 model in the 1977 catalogue, with a price of ¥80,000 (£167 then, which allowing for inflation would be in excess of £1,000 now.)
CONDITION
If you had to name two things Seiko excelled at in the 1970’s, then quartz movements and fantastic dials would likely be both on anyone’s shortlist. This Grand Quartz used the very precise 4843B movement, only held off the top of the range by the Superior model that cost ¥180,000 and sold in low numbers (probably due to the price!). This also features quick set day and date, with the date wheel showing either English or Kanji. One issue with any Grand Quartz of this age is the small bracelets, and they often do not fit larger modern wrists. However model 4843-5100 never had a bracelet fitted when new, so doesn’t have this problem. The thick gold plating only shows wear on one tip, and also has chipped near the case back in a few places but this is not visible when the watch is being worn. The glass does have a few light scratches and nibbles too. But the dial is what you will be looking at – the golden texture is very easy on the eye and in all round good condition, with nice straight hands. The leather strap is new, and and has been chosen to match the catalogue image as close as possible. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner.
