This gold capped, no date Grand Quartz Seiko makes a very good, highly accurate, vintage choice. Model reference 4840-8110.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in December 1977.
CONDITION
The Grand Quartz range from Seiko effectively killed off the Grand Seiko mechanical watches – The Grand Quartz was using the cutting edge technology, were far more accurate that the mechanical watches, and Seiko continued to use quartz movements when reintroducing the Grand Seiko models in 1993. Seiko were the first to offer quartz tech’ in watches, and continued to develop them. The 4840 movement fitted to this is the later B version – 1977 watches can have either A or B versions, but the B is a bit thinner hand has the flush case back battery hatch as seen on this one. Everything is working nicely and we will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner. The case is gold capped, where a layer of gold is formed over a steel case and this is easily seen by the rear of the case not being covered in gold (whereas plating would be). Gold capped is much thicker than plating, and while the case may have a couple of small marks on the non crown side and to a lug it still looks good. The dial and hands are excellent, and the lack of date helps make the dial more symmetrical. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
