HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1977.
CONDITION
Triple gold watches have gold bracelet, case and dial, and can look fantastic with a short sleeve shirt and a decent tan. In this case this Seamaster has a gold plated case and bracelet, which is all in good order – if it were all 18k solid gold it would be a £5,000 watch, and look the same. Gold prices in the 1970’s were crazy – in 1970 gold was $39 an ounce, and by 1980 it peaked at $595 so you can understand why watchmakers were reluctant to make solid gold watches back then. Inside the case is a 23 jewel calibre 1022 which also has micrometer regulation for precision, and everything is working well including the quick set calendar functions. You quickset the day by turning the hands backwards, which is a little unusual but effective. Condition wise there are a few things to bear in mind – the gold plating on the top of the case has worn, and it is missing from the crown completely. The wrist shots show the wear in more natural light than the studio photos, that show it at it’s worst. The inside of the bracelet also has some pitting, pointed out in the video. The bracelet has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath, and the claps has a slight dent but is secure. The crystal is signed in the centre with the Ω symbol, as it should be. The dial is in excellent condition, and the wrist photos show how this changes in the light.
