HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1977. That was the year the 196.0079 model was launched, as shown on Omega’s own website.
CONDITION
The 1342 movement was designed to be better than the cheaper quartz movements that began to flood the market. The movement has 7 jewels and can be serviced – no sealed units here. The movement also features independent hour adjustment, so advancing or turning back the time for different time zones or between BST and GMT is easy. To adjust the minute hand you have to press the button set in the crown – the idea was that this watch was so accurate that you wouldn’t need to do that. The instructions can be found here. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner. The 20 micron gold plated case is good, with just some wear to the lugs and bezel (which looks worse under studio lighting than in real life), and the dial is excellent. The acrylic crystal is signed with the Omega logo. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
