HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1977.
CONDITION
The rules for a dress watch are that it should be of a high quality, thin case, leather strap and just two hands. The idea is that if you are dressed for a night out, you want to glance at your watch to see the time not focus on details like a date window or seconds hand. Good manners really! The 20 micron gold case on this de Ville is only 6.1 mm thick, and the flat glass helps keep the size down. This watch was also available in 18k gold, but few of these sold in part to the rapid rise of gold values in the 1970’s – gold had more than quadrupled in value in the five years leading up to 1977. The movement is a calibre 625 mechanical movement that has seventeen jewels and is running well. The strap is new and could be swapped for a different colour if required. The dial has slight patina to the outer edge, but it is slight. And remember you don’t need to wear a dress watch with a tuxedo – they look very cool with jeans and a tee shirt too.
