HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1976.
CONDITION
There are Rolex GMT models, reference 6542, with bakelite bezels that some sellers are asking £100,000 for. That puts these well beyond our means, but this Tissot bezel has a similar look for a fraction of the price. It is no copycat watch either – with its navy blue dial and oversized minute hand is very distinct from other watches, even those in the Tissot range. The dial is very good, and the hands excellent. Being a proper divers watch the crown screws down and the bezel is unidirectional. The bezel does have some marks to the red half. We are not sure what the bezel is made from, but it does look like bakelite but may be resin as fragile bakelite was not in widespread use by this time. The automatic movement inside the stainless steel case is Tissot’s 2481, which is a very similar movement to Omega’s 1481 and shares the same weakness in that the crown push set quick set date doesn’t work (not sure how this would work with a screw down crown anyway?). Otherwise the movement works well and keeps decent time, and the date still changes at midnight. The bracelet is original but short – we have fitted an extension to allow it to fit more wrists. The bracelet has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath.
