This 1976 Tissot was a gift for long service, and the conservative styling still works today. Model reference 11001.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the long service inscription on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being gifted (or well earned) in 1976. The lucky chap was A. A. Willett, who works for Barringtons Ltd. The case was also assayed in 1976. The movement was made in 1973, but could not have been paired with the case until 1976
CONDITION
The manual wind Tissot 2461 movement is ticking away nicely, and has the quick set date that works by repeatedly pressing the crown inwards. These are quite fragile mechanisms and often fail, and this watch sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t so we are selling it with this known fault. You can advance the date manually by winding the hands forward, and it does turn at midnight correctly, so it is easy to live with. The original signed crown is still fitted and is functional, but heavily worn. The case was made by DS&S (David Shackman and Sons), who were quite esteemed watch case makers. It is good overall but does have some marks on the non crown side. We should not overlook that gold prices in the 1970’s rose rapidly, so having a gold watch as a gift was a big deal. In 1970 gold was $38.90 an ounce, but by 1976 this had risen to $133.77 and it would continue to rise until it hit $594.90 in 1980. The dial has some foxing spots but is not bad at all. The acrylic crystal and leather strap are both new, so this is ready to enjoy.
