This Lincoln has a great olive greed fade dial set into the very popular Super Compressor water resistant case.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the production date number stamped to the inside of the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in September 1975.
CONDITION
Super compressor refers to the case maker, and it is one of the rarer occasions where the maker of the case is more significant than the name on the dial. There are no fewer than 12 companies called Lincoln involved in making watches over the years, and we don’t know exactly which one this is. We suspect it is the company based in Maastricht. What they have done was common practice – design and have the dial made, match it to the movement and then case them all together. How successful the watch is depends upon your dial design and the quality of the components chosen, and it is all good news on that. The dial is very interesting, and has survived in very good condition. The dial is the part we look at most, so condition and design is critical. The movement is an automatic ETA 2783, with quick set date. That is running and setting well, so while it is not exotic or revolutionary it is a solid choice. Then there is the case, made by Super Compressor and retaining the original cross hatched crown. It is all stainless steel, with screw on case back, and was originally rated to 12ATM/120M. That is a lot for a watch that wasn’t designed as a diver, and may even be over engineered for a daily watch, but this has helped keep everything in great shape. On the negatives the case back has some unusual marks, maybe where tool slip marks have been over polished out? And the case has light wear marks. The bracelet is not original, but this watch might suit a black, tan or green leather strap too – it is a surprisingly adaptable design.
