Seiko’s only mechanical alarm watch, the Bell-Matic range ran for years and had many different variations.  Model reference 4006-6031.

HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?

From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in June 1974.

CONDITION

It was not easy to make alarm wristwatches, and this niche market was only really serviced by brands like Vulcain with the Cricket and Jaeger-LeCoultre with the Memovox for many years.  But gradually other brands began to make them, and make them cheaper for the masses.  In a world where our phone beeps at us on average of 40 times a day, a mechanical alarm sounds and feels special.

This watch is one of the later model Bell-Matic.  There is an excellent article about the Bell-Matic models here for those who want to read up on the models, but this watch is fully functioning and in good cosmetic condition.  You manually wind the spring for the alarm barrel, and the watch itself can only by wound by movement.  This two barrel solution with one crown is neat, and if you only had one spring barrel the watch would stop after the alarm sounded.   To set the alarm, wind the crown for six full turns to give you about 10 seconds of alarm sound.   Then pull the crown out tot he first position and turn it anticlockwise – this will move the internal bezel to the time you want the alarm to sound.  Finally pull out the pusher at two to switch the alarm on.  To stop the alarm you just push the pusher back into the case.  The dial is especially nice, with a deep blue finish.  The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.  In the video we made a mistake, saying the date can be awkward to set up – the date can also be quick set via the pushing in the pusher at 2, and this is all functioning correctly too.

This watch will be supplied with our branded presentation box and our Certificate of Authenticity.
