HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the Birmingham import hallmark on the inside of the case back we can accurately date this watch to being assayed in 1974.
CONDITION
Diamonds may be a girls best friend, but that is not where the quality in this watch stops. Baume and Mercier have been making watches since 1830, so they know what they are doing. Baume and Mercier are now owned by Richemont, and you can no longer get a ladies watch in a gold case from them, but the cheapest mechanical watch they sell is £2,550 in a steel case (£6,100 if you want diamonds…) The case of our vintage watch is not big, but bigger than many cocktail watches and rare to find in precious metal. Inside the 18k white gold case is a BM775 movement, which is manual wind and has 17 jewels. The jet black dial looks to be stone, possibly onyx – metal dials are painted only on the part you see and this is black on the rear of the dial too, plus it is not dished like metal dials tend to be. There are no cracks in the dial. The deep blackness of the dial contrasts nicely with the sparkle of the 36 diamonds in the bezel. There is a small scratch on the glass near the centre, which looks far worse in the photos than it does in real life. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
