HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can see the watch was made in 1974, but the inscription on the case back shows it was presented by Boots to R.E. Latham in 1978 for 25 years service. You can read more about the 166.0168 reference on Omega’s own website here.
CONDITION
Some presentation watches for long service are not worn, and sit in their boxes forever. Others are enjoyed as they were intended to be, and this watch falls into the later category. So the case back, with the engraving, is scratches and the 20 micron gold plating has worn thin in places. The gold capping has come off the original signed crown too. But the dial is very good, and the signed acrylic is excellent. The movement is Omega’s 1012 automatic, which allowed a very low profile due to some clever packing of the automatic winding works. You also get a quick set date function, which is extra useful if you are going to wear this in rotation with other watches. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred (this watch may better suit a thicker strap than we have initially chosen).
