This men’s vintage gold Tissot, complete with box, is a very cheap way to buy a Swiss automatic gold watch from a good brand.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the hall mark on the inside of the case back we can accurately date this watch to being assayed in 1973. The movement was made in 1972, but could not have been paired with the case until later.
CONDITION
The early seventies had some of the boldest watch designs, sometime to incorporate the cutting edge quartz technology, and sometimes just to be bold. This watch falls in neither of those camps, being quite conservative and with an mechanical movement. That movement is a caliber 2481, which was a joint venture with Tissot and Omega (Omega called their version 1481). This movement has a weak spot – the quick set date mechanism, which commonly doesn’t work and that is the case with this watch. It is a common part to fail, and as such wouldn’t have been covered by warranty anyway, and happily this watch still has the standard date change working as you wind past midnight. Otherwise the movement is working well, and the lack of quick set date is the reason this watch is cheap The DS&S case (David Shackman and Son) was made in England for Tissot, and Swiss companies including Longines and Rolex as well as Tissot would send their movements to be cased in the UK. This was to avoid punitive import duties on complete gold watches, but not on movements, and was quite common from the 1950’s onwards. The silver dial has just a few marks if you look closely, but these are difficult to see on the wrist. The case is all in decent condition and has never been engraved, and the acrylic glass is new. So is the leather strap, which could be changed for a different colour if preferred.
