One of the strangest and rarest Seiko watches we have ever offered, this pocket watch goes against the trends. Model reference 17-3150.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in January 1973. We have included a picture from the 1974 catalogue showing both models available, and we currently have the other version too.
CONDITION
Quite who thought, back in 1973, that what the customers wanted was a rectangular Seiko pocket watch with wood inserts in an art deco style is unclear. But while we don’t have Seiko’s sales figures just the fact that we have never seen another example of this pocket watch anywhere shows it was not a runaway sales success. However if you want one, we now have two to choose from, bought from a collector in the Far East.
This one was the cheaper version at ¥18,000, which was roughly the same price as an automatic chronograph, which might explain why they were slow sellers. The case is all stainless steel and has real wood inserts flanking the rectangular dial. The hand winding calibre 17 movement is keeping time. The cherry red dial is clean but not very legible – the stripes on the dial can confuse and the dial is easy to read upside down, as the crown is unusually at 6 not 12. But this is not a practical everyday watch anyway, so why would that be conventional!
