A high specification ladies Tissot Saphir – 18k case and bracelet, high beat manual wind movement and sapphire crystal.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The inside of the case back has both the Helvetica head as a Swiss 0.750/18k hallmark, and a UK import hallmark for being assayed in 1973. It is this year that we think this watch was made.
CONDITION
This Tissot Saphir was clearly a top end watch. As well as the case and bracelet being in 18k gold, the movement used was a high beat (28,800bph) Tissot 2401. This 17 jewel movement would have been more complex to produce that a lower rate one, and it is running well. The serial number disc, usually about 4 mm across, has been lost but these movements were only made for three years and that period fits the hallmark age range, so there is little doubt about the age of this watch. The inside of the case back is marked Tissot, 750 and has the import hallmark. It is also stamped OWC, as is the bracelet. So the bracelet and case were made by Omega – Omega and Tissot merged in 1930, but kept distinct lines of watches. By the 1970’s, some movement development was shared (for example, the Tissot 2390 is the same as the Omega 1012) but this is the first time we have seen a case stamped with OWC and Tissot together. The bracelet is a curb chain affair, in 18k, with a safety chain and a Tissot signed clasp. The sapphire crystal is very good, and again very high specification for the time. The dial has a few marks, but these look worse in the enlarged photographs than in real life. The video is more representative of this than the photos.
