The Accutron is one of the major watchmaking achievements in horology of the past century, and every collection should have one.  Model reference A2662.

HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?

From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1973.  There is also a long service engraving on the case back for thirty years service, with the numbers 2-1-46 at the bottom – possibly the date Richard Colvin started at Asplundh.

CONDITION

The Bulova 2181 movement is not a quartz, but it is battery powered.  Instead of using the vibrations from a quartz crystal to regulate the movement, the Accutron uses two tuning forks, measuring the vibration from those and keeping the watch telling good time.  These tuning forks have become the logo for Bulova, and it is also why this technology is known as hummers – you can hear the watch working if it is near your ear.  So good was the technology that NASA used an Accutron clock on the moon lander in 1969, and you will find this tech in watches form IWC, Longines, Omega and more – all acknowledging the Bulova patents.

This is a fine example.  The dial is good, and the starburst effect is a little stronger than usual by design.  The movement is all working well, including the quick set date (you do not pull the signed crown out on these, just turn it clockwise whilst in the regular position.)  The three piece case is gold plated on the top, and the high wear case back is actually gold filled for extra durability.  We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner.  The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.

This watch will be supplied with our branded presentation box and our Certificate of Authenticity.

From 1st September 2021 we will be planting a tree for every watch we sell, working with the International Tree Foundation (Est 1922) to make this business positive on carbon.  By buying anything pre owned you are effectively reusing what already exists, but this takes it further and makes us feel good.
