HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the hallmark on the inside of the case back we can accurately date this watch to being assayed as an import into London in 1972.
CONDITION
When launched in 1966, the Universal Geneve calibre 1-66 was the thinnest self winding movement in the World. Using a microrotor and clever design allows the movement to be just 2.5mm thin, and they kept that record until 1978. It really isn’t easy to do that – nor especially cheap either. The watch entrusted to carry this revolutionary (pardon the pun) new movement was the Shadow line. Universal Geneve turned to Gerald Genta, who designed the Polerouter in 1954 for them, and he came up with the designs. It is a classic look, and these were available in steel, gold plated or top of the line was the 18k gold case we have here. The different material models carried different names, respectively White Shadow, Gilt Shadow and Golden Shadow. The condition of this watch is fair – it is not a safe queen, but isn’t bad either. The case has no significant damage, and the original dial doesn’t either. The slightly curved glass does have a couple of chips near one. The crown is original, but missing the gold cap from the end. The dark red or brown leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement, crown.
