The Megaquartz is an important step in Omega’s history, using their first in house quartz movement. Model reference 196.0038
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1972. This is only two years since the launch of quartz watches, and this was the first Omega that used the industry standard 32kHz frequency first introduced by Girard-Perregaux that is still used today. This model wasn’t launched until 1974, so maybe Omega were doing long term testing before launch?
The Geneve was one of the most diverse ranges Omega ever produced – recently we have listed a steel sports automatic, a solid gold manual wind dress watch and now this gold plated quartz watch, all called Geneve, all from 1972. But this was the one to have if you wanted the latest in technology. Quartz was the thing to have, and Omega embraced the technology – first with Beta 21, then the 1300 and 1310 calibres. All is working well, including the pusher to hack the seconds at 2 and the date quick set pusher at 4, as shown in the video. If you pull the crown out to the first position you can move the hour hand independently, ideal for quick time changes on timezones or during DST. No wonder this wasn’t just quartz, this was Megaquartz! The gold plated case has a couple of small dents but is otherwise very good, as are the dial and hands. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner.
This watch will be supplied with our branded presentation box and our Certificate of Authenticity.
