A nicer than average example of the rarer day date automatic Omega Geneve. Model reference 166.0117.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1972. According to Omega’s own website, this model was launched in 1972 too.
CONDITION
in 1972 the Geneve was the cheapest route into Omega ownership, but this one would have been high up in the Geneve model line up. With and automatic movement that has both quick set day and date, this would have commanded a premium. And this example has been looked after too – the crystal has the logo in the centre, as does the crown, and the gold plating looks in good shape too (which is not always the case). The case does have a ding on the non crown side, towards the bottom. The calibre 1022 movement has twenty jewels, and also features hacking seconds. The original, unrestored dial is clean with very light patina, and the hands look original too when compared to the catalogue picture – quite distinct with both lume and paint used to ensure good legibility in all lights. The Omega leather strap is nearly new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material non Omega strap if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement, crown, crystal, buckle and strap, but we are not 100% sure about the buckle being a genuine Omega part.
