HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the supplied Extract from the Archives from Longines, which has the same serial number as found on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being invoiced in June 1972.
CONDITION
The Ultra-Chron range was launched in 1967 and ran for about eight years. The earliest watches had a 36,6 kbph movements, regulated to far exceed COSC specifications by running at within a minute a month (+/- 2 seconds a day). These high beat movements were joined by others running at 28,800 beats per hour, which is a little easier to maintain while still being high quality. GQ Magazine have released this article on why you should buy one before prices increase. This one has the squared case, far larger than average for a square case but still comfortable. It has a clamshell construction, and the ability to use the 20mm lugs on the top (as shown), or 22mm lugs lower down if you prefer. In the current set up you use springbars in the lower 22mm lugs to keep the case clamped – a very clever design. The movement is Longines 6651, which has semi quickset date. It can be handwound, but the signed recessed crown makes this difficult to do so better to let the automatic mechanism do the work for you. The blue dial has golden hands and hour markers, and is in good condition with just a few small marks. The box is definitely later than the watch and has been paired together, but is better than nothing. The leather strap is a new old stock Longines tapered one, fitted with an original buckle.
