HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back and the production date stamped on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1972.
CONDITION
The Black Velvet is not a range we were familiar with, but this website has a scanned copy of a 1972 advert showing the model with this bracelet, confirming that the box matches the watch here. The case is stamped 14k Gold, and as it is 14k and not hallmarked this watch was probably intended for the US market. The bracelet is rolled gold, much thicker than gold plate but not solid gold. The bracelet also has a neat little tool free way of adjusting it, as shown on the video. The dial does have some raised spots and some damage at 8, but being so small these look far worse on the photos than in real life. The 5BD movement is a 23 jewel manual wind calibre, with shock protection, and was the top of the line for Bulova ladies movements for the time. The claw set diamonds sit against a black background in triangles that also act as mounts for the bracelet, which does make them stand out more. But why the Black Velvet model comes in a mustard yellow velvet box is a mystery to us!
