This Bulova Automatic is a nice ladies watch and all the rarer for being an automatic winding movement. Model reference 725-2
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1972. The movement is dated for 1970, but the watch could not have been completed until 1972.
CONDITION
Not too many manufacturers made ladies automatic watches, and 95% of ladies vintage watches are manually wound. The reasons are two fold – one it is difficult to squeeze all the mechanical parts into a ladies case, and second the automatic movements are thicker, making some automatic ladies watches sit too high on the wrist for the diameter of the dial. Bulova overcame this by using the 7EDAD movement, a 17 jewel item that cleverly moved some parts to allow a thinner profile despite including a quick set calendar which is all running well. They also chose a square case, which covers a greater wrist area than a square case making the watch appear slimmer on the wrist. That case is 20 micron gold plated, which has stood up quite well, when the norm was 10 microns. The golden dial and hands are good with just very minor blemishes. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
