A gold presentation watch from London goldsmiths and watchmakers J.W. Benson, once of the last ones before the brand was bought by Garrards.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the London hall mark on the inside of the case back we can accurately date this watch to being assayed in 1972, and from the inscription on the case back we know it was presented to J.W.C Gray in 1974 for 25 years service. Either year can be considered valid for a birth year watch. We also wonder if this watch that starts J.W. was especially picked for the person who shared the first two initials.
CONDITION
This example is wearable without being cosmetically perfect. The dial has a linen effect, as this does usually catch some dirt and that is the case here. The writing is still clear though, and that is what most collectors want. The case is better than most, with thicker gauge gold used so no brass spacer is required. J.W. Benson was a quality outfit to the end, so this example of not cutting corners is not unique to the case. The movement is a Peseux 7060, a 17 jewel manual wind movement with sub seconds and this is running well. The acrylic glass and the leather strap are both new, and the strap could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
This watch will be supplied with our branded presentation box and our Certificate of Authenticity.
