HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The papers for this watch have not been completed, but they are correct for the period (they mention the Yemen Arab Republic for example) From the serial number on the movement we know this was made in 1971, and the bracelet is also stamped 4 71 but we don’t know if that 4 signifies the 4th quarter or fourth month of 1971.
CONDITION
The T12 was a series of divers watches, where the divers bezel turns underneath the glass to prevent it being knocked. They were also available as a chronograph, and we currently have one of those in stock here too. This example is the regular three hander, powered by Tissot’s automatic 782-1 movement with semi quick set date. The large case is dink free and the exposed edge of the glass is not chipped – a weak point in the design of these. The bracelet is made by Gay Freres, and this company are acknowledged to be one of the great bracelet makers in history – especially in steel. Early Rolex Oyster bracelets were made by them, and they also made bracelets for Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, Heuer, Zenith and others – most notable being the first Royal Oak watches for Audemars Piguet which would have been done at the same time as this far more affordable Tissot. The bracelet is quite long and our sister website, SpareLinks.com, may have extra links if required, but two links appear to still have the black protection on them from when they were new. The dial is showing patina all over it, but the internal bezel (operated by the crown at 2) turns smoothly. Both crowns are signed.
