HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1971. While this model is not listed on the Omega website, the sister watch with a leather strap is here.
CONDITION
This Omega Constellation is a mix of good and bad. The bracelet is good, the case is marked. The movement is good – chronometer rated in its day, but the dial has some marks. However it is all original, right down to the acrylic crystal with the Omega logo in the centre. The crown is also signed. The case that holds the movement is clamped into the rest of the case by 4 grub screws to aid water resistance, and to get to the movement requires some skill and experience. The worst part of the whole watch is the case. It is 40 micron gold plated, which is very thick, but you can see the plating is so thick it has chipped off on the rear corners. The plating is also bubbling on the front. Ideally the case would be stripped and replated, but we don’t know people who can do that – this is why this is cheap for an Omega Chronometer. The bracelet is long and has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath. The movement is Omega’s calibre 1001, a 20 jewel automatic that was adjusted to 5 positions and has hacking and quick set date. The movement runs at 28,800 bph and while it was running okay we thought it would benefit a service so we have organised this, and the movement photo is taken before this service.
