Naturally the Flagship was the top of the range Longines, and combined with a silver case and bracelet it is a great example. Model reference 4006.1
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Longines are rightly proud of their long and successful history, and unlike a lot of companies do not just use it for advertising. We contacted them with good, clear photos of the watch, case back and movements showing the serial numbers and they confirmed this watch was made in 1971.
CONDITION
The movement is Longines 6952, and the HF on the dial refers to the High Frequency beat rate of 28.8kbph, allowing for a smooth sweep second hand. This seventeen jewel movement also has micro screw adjustment for regulation, and quick set date. It also has an unusual hacking feature, where the movement should go round to 60 seconds and stop. However a previous watchmaker can not have known about this and has fitted the second hand on so it stops at 35 instead, as shown in the video. The bracelet and case are a metalwork of art – the maker is stamped with what looks like UN on the clasp, next to where it is also stamped 0.800 for the purity of the silver (commonly called in the UK Continental Silver – sterling silver has a higher minimum content of 0.925.). The clasp is also stamped HK18 and WG226, which we don’t know what that means. The video is the best way to see how the bracelet flows. As the bracelet is not stamped Longines, it could either be a commission piece (it could not be ‘off the shelf’ with the case design incorporated) – or possibly a prototype as we can not find another example in silver anywhere. The case back is stainless steel. There is some staining between the acrylic crystal and the case, possibly where fixing cement has faded. Overall this is an excellent quality watch, befitting any Flagship.
