This IWC is unusual in two ways – the case shape and the automatic movement – plus it has had a history. Model reference 4475.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1971.
CONDITION
We mention history in the opening line, so let’s clear that up first. When made this watch would have been 20 micron gold plated. The plating has been almost all removed, with just a small trace in the insides of the lugs, but the tell tale 20m stamp between the lugs leaves you in no doubt. This was done long before we got the watch, so we don’t know why, but they have made a decent job of it. The case back, which would not have been plated, still has a case back sticker on it although this has discoloured with time. The linen dial is very nice indeed, with a gold plated crown that might be original – IWC put a fish on their waterproof watches but not all non waterproof crowns were signed. The 23 jewel automatic movement is running well and was designed with quality on mind, hence the note on the rotor that it was adjusted to three positions – that is much better than normal watches. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
