HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The movement in this watch was available from 1963-1973. The 3000 range was launched at Earls Court in 1963, and we can presume the De Luxe was a little later. The 3000 Dato was the thinnest automatic calendar watch available in the World at the time. This watch case has imports hallmarks for 1971 and 18k gold.
CONDITION
Eterna were famous for their in house movements, so let’s start there. This watch has a large 13 ligne movement, which is automatic or manually wound. It has 21 jewels, shock protection and quick set date (operated by pulling the crown outwards). This Eterna 1500K movement would later be known as the ETA 2892, which is the base movement is many a classic watch. (Eterna sold its movement business, which is now a bigger company than Eterna but still called ET(ern)A.) All is working well, and the oscillating weight has the five ball bearings that make up the Eterna logo naturally. The textured dial is very clean – these often are dirty due to cigarette smoke – and the acrylic crystal is new. The case has a small dent on the case back but is otherwise good, with drilled lugs allowing easier strap changes. The crown is not signed, so may be a replacement. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred. This is a nice 3000 de Luxe with little to go against it.
