A very nice Eterna-Matic 2002, in the larger square stainless steel case. Model reference 111T
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1971. It wasn’t made in 2002, but would make an alternative choice if you were born in that year!
CONDITION
The movement is the automatic (hence Eterna-MATIC) calibre 12824. This 25 jewel movement eventually became the ETA 2824, a widely used and respected movement. It is housed in what is called a clamshell case, held in place with four screws and with a split stem. The main advantage of these cases nowadays is that no one who doesn’t know what they are doing can split the case, so while watchmakers will not have an issue amateurs wanting to poke about or take pictures will be put off. The movement is clean and running sweetly. Naturally the rotor uses the five ball bearing design, which Eterna invented and lead to their logo. That logo is on the original crown too. The navy blue leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred – any colour strap goes with this dial and case colour scheme, but we chose blue after seeing the 2002 model in Eterna’s official history book with a blue strap. The dial is very clean, with a slight bend on the bottom left corner, and the hands are straight. The acrylic crystal has a few minor marks.
