This blue Sigma (σ) dialed Datejust Wide Boy with steel case and bracelet is just so stylish without being brash. Model reference 1603.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number between the bottom two lugs we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1970. The inside of the caseback is also stamped for 1970 too. The USA made Rolex bracelet, produced to Rolex’s standard locally to reduce tax is dated 8/71 . This could be closer to the date of sale, or there is always a chance that this is bracelet was added later. But the watch is definitely 1970
Let’s help with some terminology here, as there is a lot going on. The majority of Rolex Datejust’s of this period are reference 1601, and the main difference on the 1603 is the engine turned bezel rather than the fluted bezel. There is also the term ‘wide boy’ which just means the hands and hour markers are slightly wider than normal. This is a semi wide boy, where the hour markers at 6 and 9 are wider. Sigma is a little more involved, as there was a drive in Switzerland to use 18k gold on the hands and hour markers, and to signify that the various companies agreed to use the Greek letter Sigma. So on this watch at the bottom of the dial you have the phrase σ T SWISS T σ, with the T also signifying Tritium lume. So on this example we have a rarer reference, with rarer dial markers, and is also signed with the sigma letter to indicate the best quality materials. You can read more on Sigma dials here.
The 1603 otherwise is very similar to the 1601. You have the same stepped dial, and they use the same case and movement. The dial on this example is good, with just a slight fade near the edge between 12 and 4. The calendar is with the open 6 and 9’s, and this is seen under the usual 2.5x magnifier on the acrylic crystal. The jubilee bracelet is correctly stamped, but a few D shaped links have been added to make the bracelet longer, and this is visible from the back quite clearly but is harder to spot on the exterior. We make this clear on the video. The screw down crown operates perfectly. The calibre 1570 is very clean and running well. The stainless steel case is all quite good, and has the drilled lugs that make strap changing so much easier.
