This gold capped Grand Seiko is a very easy watch to enjoy – looks great, and is running even better. Model reference 5645-7010.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in March 1970.
CONDITION
These early mechanical Grand Seiko watches have really grown in popularity over the past few years, and it is not difficult to see why. You get a high end quality product, for good value, and it does not look like you have to cover your wrist in the bad part of town. This version is gold capped – a thin sheet of gold is fitted over a stainless steel case. This is much thicker than gold plate, so wear is rarely an issue. The bezel has a couple of deeper dings and even then it does not reveal the base metal under the gold. The movement in the 56GS is the high beat (28,800bph) Seiko 5645A, with quick set date. This 25 jewel movement is automatic but can be hand wound too, and was originally adjusted for 5 positions and temperatures. It is still running within COSC specifications, all these decades later. The original signed crown is still in place, as is the gold medallion on the case back (which can be missing, worn or damaged frequently). The dial, glass and hands are all good and show just the smallest marks. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
