A really clean GUB Glashütte Spezimatic mean’s watch – an original Glashütte, but not a Glashütte Original! See below for the explanation.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the production date stamp on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in the fourth quarter of 1969.
CONDITION
Glashütte is an amazing town in Saxony, Germany. Closer to the Czechia border than to Dresen, it only has 7,000 people there. But it is home to Germany’s Watchmaking Museum, as well as A. Lange & Söhne, Glashütte Original, Tutima, Mühle Glashütte, Moritz Grossmann, NOMOS Glashütte, and others. (you can see photos form our visit to the museum here.) Post WW2 the area was behind the iron curtain, but they were quick to recognise the local skill set and continued to make watches throughout communism. After the wall came down all these newer companies either sprung up or were resurrected.
So the Spezimatic we have was made when the area was the GDR, and this is what is stamped on the dial. They didn’t make watches to the same very high standard that the current Glashütte Original watchmakers do, they were more for the people, unsurprisingly. But this example has survived very well indeed. The 20 micron gold plated case is like new, and the black dial perfect. We don’t say this lightly, but this could be an exhibit in their watchmaking museum such is the condition! The movement is the GUB Spezimatic calibre 75 automatic with 26 jewels and semi quick set date, which is all working correctly. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
