The Omega Chronostop was a one minute chronograph that timed to 1/5th of a second, and this one is very original. Model reference 146.009.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1969. But the inscription on the case back is dated for 1973, which may be when this was gifted. This Chronostop model was in production from 1968 to 1970.
CONDITION
While this is no safe queen, it is highly original. The hard to find strap we will come to later, but it also has the signed crown and acrylic glass still fitted too. The glass has been polished, but there are some marks around the very edges when you look closely and a hairline crack near 11. If you prefer we can swap the crystal for a new OEM one, but in the interest of originality we have left it in place for now. The dial and hands have nicely and evenly faded lume, and the centre chronograph hand has not lost any paint as some do. The movement in the Chronostop is Omega’s hand wound calibre 920, which is slightly odd manual wind movement. It has a date that can be semi quickset by winding the hands past midnight, back to 22.00, and past midnight but that is not the strange part. The chronograph can measure in increments down to 1/5th of a second, but it doesn’t record minutes. You can move the minute and hour hand to twelve, but then you can’t read the time! There is also no constant seconds hand. The pusher at two starts and stops/resets the counter with one push, as demonstrated in the video. The leather strap is the an original Omega item, fitted with clasp number 27. These straps have no holes, but a way of locking the strap length to the clasp internally and then secured further with a spring bar. We have cleaned and conditioned the strap, but you could always add a new strap of a different colour if preferred.
