A nice King Seiko from the 2nd generation 44KS series, with manual wind movement and calendar. Model reference 4402-8000.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in September 1968.
CONDITION
The 44KS King Seiko models went through Kaizen, which is a Japanese term for continual development. Why this matters is that we can tell that this watch is all original – earlier watches had Diashock written on the dial, and the gold medallion on the case back didn’t feature the Daini factory logo until 1968. This model was the first King Seiko with a calendar, and it can be quick set in either direction, and was first launched in 1965. This model also has hacking on the movement, but it was a development design as the earlier watches hacking is quite fragile and many don’t work – this stronger design is more reliable. The design of this watch is the inspiration for the new King Seiko models. The gold plated case is in very good condition and there is an engraving, possibly in Japanese, on the case back. The medallion is still fixed firmly, and the crown is also the original signed SW for Seiko, water proof. The acrylic glass is likely to be a modern replacement though. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred. The buckle is signed Seiko, so likely a later addition. Overall this is a very good example of a 44KS
