The Seiko 1960’s day date keeps growing in popularity (and price) as it has a lot going for it in today’s market. Model reference 6206-8110
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in March 1966.
CONDITION
In the intro we mention the 6206-8110 day date has a lot going for it, so we should explain. Seiko is a well respected maker of course, but why this model? Firstly is the case size, which suits a modern wrist better than some of the smaller contemporary watches. Secondly it is made from stainless steel, not plated, so continues to look good and will continue to look good in years to come. Thirdly you have a 26 jewel automatic movement, with calendar and quick set, so it is a practical watch to wear. Finally the dials of Seiko watches of the 60’s and 70’s were very well painted, so continue to look good today. Some of this is down the the cases, which were waterproof to also stops dirt getting in, but whatever it is this grey dial is very good. The bezel has a saw tooth design, but the edge of this plated part is worn very evenly – the wear is almost too even to be accidental. We show this in the video, and it could have been that it was an original finish but the photos of this model in the catalogues of the time are black and white and in Japanese. These decorated bezels are a bit of a dirt trap, so we have cleaned this part in our ultrasonic bath. The original bracelet has been lost over time, but we have fitted a period rubber strap. We can swap this for a new leather strap if preferred.
