This Le Cheminant Master Mariner is unusual – a solid gold divers watch!
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the hallmark on the inside of the case back we can accurately date this watch to being assayed in 1965.
CONDITION
Regulars will know we like Le Cheminant watches here. As we have commented on before, they always seem to go a little extra in the specification, but this is the first solid gold divers watch we have ever had from any brand. Of course the question is why would you need a gold divers watch (answer- you don’t!), but it took Rolex until 1969 to launch their Submariner in a gold case. This Master Mariner is of course far more affordable than the Rolex, and a bit of an all round bargain. The bezel turns easily, without any clicks and in both directions so we would suggest this has always been more divers style watch than a tool watch. The wide lume hands and lume pip on the second hand are good and still have some lume showing. The dial is evenly covered in patina but original. The case has a good weight to it and the case back does screw on. While the case back is slightly dented the fine etching is still readable. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred. The movement is a 17 jewel ETA 2472 with semi quickset date that is working well. The crown has a trident on it, or possibly an M or W, and we don’t know if that is original or not.
