HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in November 1965. The Grand Seiko range was only launched in 1960, and this was the fist all stainless steel model.
CONDITION
The Grand Seiko were designed from the outset to be the best Seiko could make. To that extent, they were both expensive and rarely exported – finding one of these inside Europe is not so easy. This example all checks out, with the earlier Gold lion emblem that was replaced on later models with the GS letters. This watch also has the signed crown, with the W for Waterproof (when new – never get vintage watches wet now). The manual wind movement is Seiko’s 5722B, the final evolution of the movements fitted to this model which had a slightly faster beat. The regulator on this movement allows for very fine adjustment, and the watch is working very well including the quick set date feature. The case, with its thick lugs, is unpolished and therefore shows light surface marks. The dial is very good, and marked 5722-9990 to match the model number. There is a small stain near the centre of the dial, below 12, which is not immediately noticeable but it is there. The hands show the same grammar of design shape still recognisible on modern Grand Seiko watches – the later GS watches had stick hands, which are okay but not quite as nice. The Geckota leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
