The unusual design movement in this Citizen is also found in the Jet and Autodater models. This is model reference A51361
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in March 1965.
CONDITION
Before we get to the movement, let’s start with the basics. Any 37 mm stainless steel cased watch is popular, and this is no exception. This case is unpolished so will show small signs of wear as shown in the photos. The semi recessed crown is signed CTZ as is should be. The dial has ridges like an LP, but as these are silver they break up the light like tiny prisms and the refracted light is not unlike mother of pearl with the purples and greens that show. The hour markers are quite prominent and also have the tiniest lume plot – the hands are lumed too, but do not expect vintage watch lume to still be effective. One negative is the applied Citizen logo is not perfectly flat on the dial, but this doesn’t affect the running of the watch.
The movement is a ring rotor that was often referred to as a Jet rotor, yet the word Jet doesn’t appear on the case or dial of this watch. Rather than a centrally mounted oscillating weight, the weight runs around the outside of the movement. Citizen were not the first to do this, and more recently Carl F Bucherer have resurrected the design, but Citizen used this Ring Rotor movement in their first divers watch. It was only available in the 1960’s, before being dropped for thinner and cheaper to make movements. You can read more here. Inside this exact watch is calibre 1121, which has 21 jewel and semi quickset date (Midnight – 21:00 – midnight) and can be hand wound, albeit that is hampered by the semi recessed crown. It is easier to let the automatic wind do the work for you. The video shows the ring rotor in action.
