This solid gold Avia Matic was presented from Ronson products for 21 years service to W. R. Lipyeat in 1969, although it was made a little earlier.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The hall mark on the inside of the case back shows this watch was assayed in London in 1965, but the engraving the case back shows this watch was presented as a long service award in 1969. either year can be considered for a valid birth year watch.
CONDITION
With a name life Avia Matic, it is no surprise to find an automatic movement inside the case. Not only is this easier to live with day to day, but as automatic movements are thicker than manual wind movements you need a thicker case, which means more gold. The movement is a 25 jewel ETA 2472, which is running well and has the semi quick set date feature (midnight – 20:00 – midnight). The dial has some dirt, and at one point the hour hand has dragged some dirt under it and scratched the dial between 2 and 4. This issue has been fixed so it will not happen again. The leather strap is new, and this is fitted to dog leg lugs that take normal spring bars.
