Originally launched for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, this monopusher chronograph was Japan’s first chronograph wrist watch. Model reference 5717-8990.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in December 1964.
CONDITION
These are a very wearable watch, thanks to the size and clean design. The dial isn’t covered in subdials – the central seconds hand is for the chronograph and the minutes can be counted by moving the steel bezel and lining it up with the minute hand. The calibre 5717A movement is all working well, and the hand wound, 21 jewel unit also has a proper column wheel mechanism rather than the cheaper cam and lever design you might find elsewhere. The crown and pusher are original – they both have concave ends, and the crown has flats in between the grooves – a tiny detail, but valid to point out. The case back has the seahorse logo, as the watch was described as waterproof – there were various case backs for these over the years, with the earliest being the Olympic flame. The case back engraving is worn down and are hard to read, as so many of these are. The dial is in good condition, with just tiny marks, and the bezel is missing just small amounts of paint. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case and movement.
