HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1964. This model was first introduced in 1962 according to Omega’s own website.
CONDITION
These days both the Seamaster and De Ville ranges are kept separate, but Omega have history of combining two sub brands together on the dial. Perhaps it was because this dress watch was in a waterproof case, so they added Seamaster to differentiate this from more standard, non waterproof dress watches? The case is a inibloc construction, so the movement is removed via the crystal. While this had the benefit of making more water tight (fewer case joins), it also stops the untrained person dismantling the watch to take a look at the movement. The case is also gold capped, so this is much thicker than gold plate – the bezel might be solid gold as it is quite heavy, but we could not provide any evidence it is solid gold. The crown is signed, and judging by the wear it is the original. The crystal is also signed on the centre with the Ω logo, and we have polished out most of the fine scratches. That reveals a good dial, all original, and one of the other advantages of water proof cases is they were good at keeping smoke away from the dial during a time in history when a lot more people smoked. The movement is a 17 jewel Omega calibre 610, with reed or swan neck fine regulation. This watch has an awful lot going for it.
