This is a nice Certina Waterking, and further proof that not all vintage watches break the bank. Model reference 5106 061.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number hallmark on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1964. The model number on the case back also tells us that this is a 20 micron gold plated case, with stainless steel caseback, and the movement is the calibre 25-36 – this extra information helps confirm it is the correct caseback for the watch, so the dating is certain.
CONDITION
If you are looking for a Swiss made, manual wind watch from 1964 with an in house movement you could spend far more than what this Certina would cost – and get less. The gold plated case is in good shape for it’s 60 years, with just a few marks and wear and tear. The dial has a bit of patina but is original and not repainted. The case back screws down, and provided some water resistance (hence they named the watch Waterking). The crown may be a later replacement as it is not signed, but it works perfectly despite having a slight angle and powers the nicely finished movement well – the movement even has micro fine adjustment, something you would rarely see on any new watch under £2,000. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
