This Ladies Hamilton watch has everything going for it, including diamonds in the bezel and matching box and papers. Model 5180-9.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
We have checked the model number on the case back matches the paperwork, and we can accurately date this watch to being sold in April 1963.
CONDITION
Let’s start with the diamonds. We are not trained gemologists, but we believe these to be original. The reasons are the microscopic photos shown here, (two at 48x, one photo at 200x), the use of 18k white gold doesn’t show any sign of cutting corners (it is far less common to use fake stones in 18k gold), and the original paperwork also states 4 genuine diamonds. This ladies Hamilton watch was Swiss made – historically Hamilton watches were always made in Illinois, USA, but gradually production was moved out of the US and towards Switzerland until in 1969 the American factory was closed. As well as Swiss on the dial, you also have the Helvetia hallmark for Swiss 750 (18k) gold, whereas the top line USA watches were 14k. Inside is different too – naturally the Swiss made watch uses a Swiss made movement. In this case it is a 17 jewel ETA 2410, which is running very well indeed. The leather strap is new.
